Reptile enclosures & lighting
Shed & Bask
Shed & Bask is MadGrey LLC's reptile site, written for the keeper setting up an enclosure for the first time and finding that most of the advice available is confident and uncited. It covers four species deliberately — bearded dragon, leopard gecko, ball python and crested gecko — because each one has a different binding constraint, and the site's own summary of its job is getting those four enclosures right.

What the site covers
The site is built around the decisions a keeper actually faces: how big the enclosure has to be, what lighting and heat belong in it, and what goes on the floor. Four species hubs handle the first question, and two hardware hubs — lighting and heat, substrate and safety — handle the parts that cut across every species. Sitting under those are the cross-species guides: enclosure size charts by species and life stage, PVC against glass against wood, building an enclosure against buying one, UVB mount distance and Ferguson zones, sealants and paints and plants that are safe to put near an animal, and the beginner mistakes that cost the most to undo.
Picks are made against criteria the site publishes as numbers and then applies visibly. An enclosure is judged against the published adult minimum footprint for the species, front-opening access and whether UVB can be mounted at the right distance; a lamp is judged on UV index at a stated mount distance rather than wattage or a percentage on the box; heat sources have to be thermostat-controlled and hit a published surface temperature. Every husbandry figure is cited to a published source, products are listed with their failing criteria rather than quietly dropped, and where a manufacturer publishes no figure the page says so instead of recommending anyway. The site is equally direct about its limits: there is no lab, no veterinarian and no certification behind it, it does not claim hands-on testing it has not done, and it prints no prices at all because a stale number is worse than none.
That is the same arrangement MadGrey LLC runs on every site it operates. Shed & Bask is free to read and funded by affiliate commission as a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program — if a reader buys through a link the retailer may pay a percentage, at no extra cost to them — and that commission never changes what is recommended, the order things are ranked in, or whether the site recommends against something. The disclosure sits on the site itself rather than buried in a footer, and the basis for a recommendation is always stated, because a reader can only weigh a pick if they know what it rests on.
Coverage
- Species hubs for bearded dragons, leopard geckos, ball pythons and crested geckos — sizing, setup, temperature and humidity
- Enclosures — roundups judged against published footprint minimums, PVC and humidity builds, PVC against glass against wood, build against buy
- Lighting and heat — UVB bulbs and T5 fixtures, heat sources, thermostats, thermometers and UV meters, Ferguson zones and mount distance
- Substrate and safety — substrate by species and risk, impaction evidence, and non-toxic sealants, paints, glues and plants
- Cross-species guides: enclosure size charts, setup checklists, running costs line by line, and the beginner mistakes that cost the most
A reader gets the enclosure, lighting and substrate decision for one species settled against published numbers, with the threshold for every pick stated on the page and its source linked.
How this site is funded
Shed & Bask earns affiliate commissions on some links to retailers. Those commissions never influence which products are recommended or how they are ranked. The full affiliate disclosure sets out how it works across every site MadGrey LLC operates.
